THE MYTH HUNTERS by Christopher Golden

I love finding a series like this – I’ve been burned so many times on so many fantasy series. I get 1/4 of the way through the first book, declare it Amazing, and eagerly buy the second (and third and fourth) book. Then I get a little farther into that first book, and everything just goes downhill. Happily enough, that’s not so with this series. The book stayed solid throughout … actually it just got better as it went along. I’m now 1/4 of the way through The Borderkind (second book in the series) and I bought the third and final book, The Lost Ones, with complete confidence.”

Praise for The Myth Hunters:

“The Veil Trilogy by Christopher Golden is about a lawyer named Oliver. On the night before his wedding, Oliver is having serious doubts about going through with it when Jack Frost (a very awesome rendition of the character) sweeps into the room with a wound in his side, says he’s being hunted and needs help. A stunned Oliver helps him outside, where he finds what exactly it was that attacked Frost – a gigantic creature with the body of a man and the head of a falcon, wielding a flaming sword. Frost manages to open a gate through the Veil, and Oliver shockingly finds himself in the world of Myths – legendary creature from all sorts of mythologies. Everything from Father Christmas to the obscure Jenny Greenteeth. It turns out that many of the Myths are being killed off by these powerful Myth Hunters (such as the falcon creature), and they don’t know why. And, of course, the plot escalates from there.

It’s full of well-developed and just plain *cool* characters, genuinely scary and/or awesome villains (like the Sandman), and it’s just a fun read.

Whenever I came across a character from a myth I didn’t recognize, I’d look it up just for fun. But although there’s quite a few mythical characters to keep you amused and intrigued, the main “party” (in RPG terms) remains the same. This helps you grow genuinely attached to a character who might otherwise remain nothing more than a curiosity, like Jack Frost.

The book focuses on Oliver and his party, but parts also focus on the detective trying to find Oliver back in the real world (he just disappeared, after all) and Oliver’s sister. But far from becoming confusing or tedious, these parts serve to further flesh out the intriguing world and characters Golden has created.

I love finding a series like this – I’ve been burned so many times on so many fantasy series. If you love a good, fun story and awesome characters – if you like a good dose of “fun” along with your depth and character development, then I highly recommend this series.
